Hoss lives in Posthumous Gultch, a town known for its supernatural flora and fauna. He works on a ranch taking care of his boss's flock of dream sheep. Dream sheep are sheep who are raised on a diet of fresh mintgrass and only drink from the Skyfall Canyon River, which pours from a tear in the sky and fills the riverbed with the colors of the sunsets/rises. He is in love with the ranch owner Hettie Le Rall, and very distrustful of a rival rancher named Cassius Buck.

Richelieu is a young peacock harpy whose emotions control the local weather. He regularly experiences overwhelming heartbreak because of his misplaced affections. He has never known kindness or love, his father plucks his tailfeathers out as punishment for his mistakes.

Dutch is a young foreman on his father's ranch in Andalusia County, North Dakota. He works hard to carve out a living for his family in 1935, constantly trying to live up to his father's expectations after his mother walked out them after WW1. Because of his trauma, he spends every spare moment caring for any rejected calves.

Archimedes is a religious leader for his Goddess. He believes that her incarnation will be born into the mortal plane and raze the world to ash in order to rebuild her empire during which time he will shed his mortal form and acsend to her side forever onward. His is mentally unstable and highly devoted to her, boardering on insanity.
